When Passion Becomes the Path: Turning What You Love Into Fuel for Growth
Forget shortcuts — learn how consistent, aligned energy transforms your business and your life
When I first transitioned from my computing 9–6 role into holistic health, I honestly had no clue what I was doing in terms of building a business or brand. This was over 20 years ago, when I had the luxury of youth on my side.
Back then, I actually loved being on the front end of building out websites, and was lucky enough to do both front-end design work and coding. It was a happy mix for me. I was working in Soho, in London, and everything was flowing smoothly.
Then life crashed.
And burned.
My dad had an intracranial bleed and fell into a coma, but he survived. For many years afterwards he lived with epilepsy. Thankfully, he regained his speech from slurred utterances, and he was lucky enough not to be permanently paralysed. Nonetheless, his illness and slow recovery — stretching from months into years — put a huge strain on me and my mum at the time, as anyone who’s cared for a sick family member will know.
At the same time, the Universe dealt me another blow….
The company I worked for was suddenly bought out and relocated outside of London. My relatively cushy 40-minute commute into Central London suddenly became a hellish 2-hour trek — two trains, a tube, and even a walk through a ditch, I kid you not.
But it was in that dark season that something unexpected happened. Seeking holistic ways to help my father heal, I came across Reiki healers who happened to be brilliant psychics. They told me things about my father’s health that doctors later verified through scans.
I tried having some energy healing sessions myself, and they were glorious. Somehow, a wave of deep healing transported me into otherworldly realms. On a physical level, I felt nourished, like I’d gone for a swim in the ocean.
Soon after, I began training in Reiki, and quietly built out my own website. This was 2004, just as WordPress was taking off. Social media hadn’t yet exploded, but I remember embedding my Facebook feed onto my site and watching it grow — from 1 to 100 followers, then 10,000 within a year, then 1 million within two.
This was the dawn of the social media revolution, long before anyone aspired to be an “influencer.” You either influenced, or you didn’t — but there wasn’t a label attached.
Now, of course, there’s a lot of narcissism in the online space. The endless selfies, the clickbait, the digital avatars run by men pretending to be women. But despite the noise, it’s still a brilliant time to be creating. When used with intention, technology helps your message reach the right people.
That’s one reason I love Substack. It’s longform, ad-free, and built for cultivating depth instead of distraction. You can curate an audience here that feels alive and connected.
And here’s the truth I’ve learned:
Whatever you choose to do, it really is best if you are passionate about it — if you love it. Running your own business will bring hard work your way. If you don’t enjoy what you do, that hard work will exhaust you quickly.
You also need to become your own best cheerleader when the chips are down.
In mindfulness, we say the seed and the fruit are one. If you plant seeds of frustration or resentment, that’s what you’ll harvest. If you plant with love and presence, you’ll grow something that sustains you.
Because whatever you build will either become your liberation — or your prison.
There is no magic formula, no shortcut. It takes alignment of energy and the passage of time — consistency — to see results.
Yes, you can ask people to follow you, and maybe that works for a while. But the deeper invitation is to magnetise people, not chase them. To create from stillness, to let your ideas come in the quiet moments, and then to share them with clarity and courage.
If you love what you do, that love will carry through the work. Of course, you’ll still need skills — communication, listening, reflecting, adapting — but the real differentiator is consciousness. The energy you bring to the table is everything.
✨ Practical takeaways
Check your seed: What energy are you planting into your business or creative project today?
Be your own cheerleader: When it feels heavy, remind yourself why you started.
Consistency over perfection: Trust the passage of time. Your work compounds.
Create from quiet: Don’t just grind. Leave space for inspiration to come through.
Lead with love: If you don’t genuinely enjoy it, it won’t last.
👉 Question for you:
What’s one thing you’re doing right now because you love it — not because you “should” do it?
